From December 2006 ANIMAL PEOPLE:

Lewyt Award goes to Cleo,  a compassionate dog who saved the life of a homeless cat

Cleo has been a fixture at the Brandon Humane Society in Manitoba for over seven years.  The 10-year-old black and white Boarder Collie-Blue Heeler mix, has always been given the royal treatment, but even more so now because she is a hero.

On one of her afternoon walks with a shelter volunteer, Cleo saw something that didn't look quite right.  She barked and pulled until she convinced the volunteer to investigate a black and brown bump near the fence.  That little bump turned out to be an abandoned cat.

Cleo went right up to the cat. There would be no way the volunteer would have noticed him if it weren't for Cleo, the cat's dark coat almost camouflaged him. The little cat had been left overnight and frostbite had already set in on his ears and legs. The whimpering and crying cat wouldn't have lasted much longer out in the old. The volunteer wrapped him in a blanket and waited for Animal Control to come.

The cat was rushed to the Brandon Veterinary Clinic where he was treated. Unfortunately, many animals are often dropped off at shelters in the middle of the night.  Left outside during cold weather, they have less of a chance of survival if they are not found quickly. Luckily for this cat he was found in time.

The cat was affectionately named "Cleo's cat."  As for Cleo, she received a food treat and many accolades for her heroic act.

Cleo came to the Brandon Humane Society because she was supposed to be a herding dog and instead of herding she chased the cattle away.  She is a favorite at the shelter just the same. They are extremely proud of their compassionate dog Cleo.

The Lewyt Award for December 2006 has been presented to Cleo to honor the exceptional love and compassion she showed in saving the life of a cat that wouldn't have survived without Cleo's persistence. As a symbol of the award, North Shore Animal League America is presenting this remarkable dog and the Brandon Humane Society a $1000 check.
