ANIMALS AND POLITICS | DIRECTED BY MIKE MARKARIAN

This is a new blog devoted to discussion and information on lobbying efforts by the HSUS, whose experience in this area is well recognized. Says Markarian, "When I ask local groups [if they] are involved in lobbying efforts to protect animals, I often hear the same response: 'But we’re a nonprofit charity and we’re not allowed to lobby!'" It’s a common misperception, but it’s not true. Charitable groups can and should advocate for public policy changes. Gary D. Bass, executive director of OMB Watch, says that there is a long tradition of charitable advocacy and civic participation in this country: “Nonprofit lobbyists have been involved in nearly every major public policy accomplishment in this country—from civil rights to environmental protection to health care,” he told the Washington Post. It is an area that more activists organizations should muster.

Founded in 1968, API's mission is to advocate for the protection of animals from cruelty and exploitation.

Every year, billions of animals suffer in fur farms and circus cages, in slaughterhouses and product testing labs. In our campaigns against such cruelties, API uses powerful tools including legislation, public education, litigation, and grassroots networking. We also work actively with media to spread the word about challenges facing animals.

API's primary campaign areas currently include animals used in entertainment, captive exotic animals, companion animals, compassionate consumerism, farmed animals, and wildlife protection.

ANIMALES S.O.S. (Bolivia) e-mail: bolivia@animalessos.org Animales S.O.S. is the only animal protection organization in Bolivia affiliated with Humane Society International and the WSPA. Since 1995, Animales S.O.S. has helped over a thousand animals a year while operating on a minimal budget. The organization's main focus has been to humanely reduce the stray dog population, estimated at over 80,000 in La Paz alone. Animales S.O.S. is currently in the process of building a "true" shelter, since the animals have always been kept in the founder's house, so progress is being made, ever so slowly.Animales S.O.S. also is the only organization which enforces the laws protecting the wild animals of Bolivia. These animals are often found being sold illegally in markets, where they are neglected and abused by their owners (or neglected and abused by the people that buy them). Compassionate Traveler learned about Animales S.O.S. from one of our volunteers, Valerie Belt. While teaching at an American school in Bolivia, Valerie volunteered for Animales S.O.S. over a two-year period. In addition to donating her own time to the organization, such as walking rescued dogs cared for by Animales S.O.S., she encouraged children at the American school to help. She sponsored a middle school club which raised funds for Animales S.O.S. through bake sales. The students also provided items such as stuffed animals, dog collars, leashes, and ID tags in exchange for donations. Valerie's second year of volunteering also included working with high school students in a Roots & Shoots club (a program of the Jane Goodall Institute - see http://www.rootsandshoots.org/). The high school club's activities to support Animals S.O.S. included raising money, holding a dog food drive, building new cages for the wild birds rescued by Animales S.O.S., and doing dog care education at a local orphanage in La Paz.For more information, please visit the Animales S.O.S. multilingual Web site at:http://www.animalessos.org/

AUSTIN PETS ALIVE Austin Pets Alive! is a non-profit volunteer organization started in November, 1997, to make Austin a "No-Kill" city. APA! introduced the No-Kill Millennium Resolution, which was adopted by the Austin City Council and Travis County Commissioners' Court. In a unique partnership with the Town Lake Animal Center (TLAC), APA! is helping to stop the killing of adoptable dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens whose only crime is that they are homeless. Why are they killed? Because there are not enough homes to adopt them all. The Austin Pet overpopulation is everyone's problem, from apartment complexes overrun with feral cats, to the many litters of unwanted puppies and kittens that end up at TLAC, to the adolescent dog with behavior issues.

The BUSHMEAT PROJECT Great apes -- gorillas, chimpanzees, and bonobos -- are being hunted to extinction for commercial bushmeat in the equatorial forests of west and central Africa. A ragged farflung army of 2,000 bushmeat hunters supported by the timber industry infrastructure will illegally shoot and butcher over 3,000 gorillas and 4,000 chimpanzees this year. That's five times the number of gorillas on Rwanda's Mt. Visoke and 20 times more chimpanzees than live near Tanzania's Gombe Stream. People pay a premium to eat more great apes each year than are now kept in all the zoos and laboratories of the world.

CERTIFIED HUMANE The industrialization and consolidation of animal agriculture in the United States and around the world has created enormous “factory farms.” The resulting intensive confinement and overcrowding of livestock in modern agriculture can create stress that impairs an animal’s growth or production. All too often, growth hormones and other chemical food additives are used to compensate -- additives you probably would prefer not to consume. While these conditions may be common, the good news is they are not universal. Many producers (individuals and businesses that raise food-producing animals) provide their farm animals with treatment that safeguards an animal’s well-being and respects its natural behaviors. But how do you know which producers are which? The Certified Humane Raised & Handled label says it all. Producers’ claims that they give their farm animals a more natural, healthful environment are a good start, but the Certified Humane Raised & Handled labeling process goes further. Food items that carry the label are certified to have come from facilities that meet precise, objective standards for farm animal treatment.

THE CLOUD FOUNDATION The Cloud Foundation, a Colorado non-profit corporation, grew out of Ginger Kathrens’ knowledge and fear for not only Cloud’s herd but other wild horses in the West. “I began to realize that we were losing America’s wild horses,” Ginger says. “They are rounded up by the thousand, losing in an instant what they value most--freedom and family. Dharma Donkey

The Dharma Donkey Sanctuary is situated in the village Sagroli, Maharashtra, where donkeys are still a primary means of transport. Donkeys are the most useful but the most neglected animal in the area. More than 5000 donkeys in the area are engaged in human service in different ways. Farmers rely on donkeys for transporting farm produce, fertilizers and other materials from village to the farm, and they are even used in construction work for transporting sand, bricks, and soil.  The existing government veterinary services are inadequate to provide services to the donkeys, as it is limited to farming animals only. Moreover, the veterinarians do not have sufficient experience in donkey treatment, vaccination, traditional herbal medicine and about the proper diet of donkeys.

The donkey owners are not interested in the expense of treating old, wounded and ailing donkeys. The poor, helpless donkey owners leave the donkeys to their fate to survive the rest of their lives. Sometimes the stray dogs kill such wounded donkeys.

The objective of Dharma Donkey Sanctuary is not only to take care of abused donkeys, but also to awaken awareness and love for animals in the community in general and children in particular. Children have been involved in the activities of the Sanctuary right form the beginning.

Established in January 2002 at the auspicious hands of Ms. Maneka Gandhi, the well known environmentalist and animal lover, D.D.S. has implemented an exceptional donkey care and protection program. This is a unique effort launched and carried out effectively by an NRI Mr. Ratilal and his wife Mrs. Bonny Shah of U.S.A, who have also generously supported a residential school and the orphan rural boys and girls since 1986.

Dogs Deserve Better We are a voice for these who have none, whose sadness speaks only through their eyes. As the days become years, these dogs sit, stay, defecate, and, if among the fortunate, eat within a 10-foot radius. Chained by the neck, they have nothing in the way of respect, love, exercise, social interaction with people and other dogs, and sometimes even basic nourishment. They live as prisoners, yet long to be pets.

FARM Most farmed animals are raised on factory "farms," where they spend their entire lives in cages or crates so small that they can not even turn around. Farmed animals are not protected from cruelty under the law. In fact, the majority of state anti-cruelty laws specifically exempt farm animals from basic humane protection — so abandoning a sick animal on a pile of dead animals is considered “normal animal agricultural” practice. Hilda on a "deadpile"  Farm animals are living, feeling animals, not agribusiness “commodities.” Farm Sanctuary is working to change the way society views and treats animals used for food production. With the active support of over 100,000 members, we are.

FEDERATION DE LIAISONS ANTI CORRIDA (FLAC) French site organized to fight bullfights in Spain and elsewhere. In French, German, English and Italian.

Humane Farming Association (HFA) HFA continues to prove that with the right strategy, knowledge, and long-term commitment - major changes will result. HFA's National Veal Boycott continues to be the single most successful campaign ever conducted against factory farming. Already, HFA has achieved an unprecedented drop in the sale of drugged, anemic, and tormented baby calves. HFA's campaign against Bovine Growth Hormones (BGH) has been pivotal in mobilizing the public against this cruel and dangerous dairy hormone. And HFA has expanded its campaign against factory farming -- to stop the abuse of millions of pigs, laying hens, and other animals victimized by factory farming.

IN DEFENSE OF ANIMALS—AFRICA- In Defense of Animals-Africa’s mission is to save Cameroon's chimpanzees and gorillas from extinction. The illegal bushmeat trade and habitat loss are the primary threats to ape populations. IDA-Africa wages a Public Education and Sensitization Campaign, producing and distributing posters and brochures, giving presentations in schools and communities, and broadcasting radio ads to raise awareness of laws against holding or killing chimpanzees and gorillas and make it socially unacceptable to eat them. IDA-Africa’s Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Center (SYCRC) provides sanctuary to 55 chimpanzees ~ all of whom are orphans of the illegal bushmeat trade. Hunters captured them as young babies, often still clinging to their mothers’ bodies, to sell as "pets" or hotel “mascots”. Some orphans at SYCRC were rescued as infants, others languished in strict, debilitating confinement for decades before their second chance for a life of joy and dignity at SYCRC. IDA-Africa offers volunteer opportunities in Cameroon and an Adopt-A-Chimpanzee program.

The Kindness Trust Our mission is: “To promote kindness towards all other living beings and enshrine it as a recognisable trait in the Australian character and culture ” From their stateted beliefs: "I can understand why some theologians believe animals have no souls. To the tortured animal, the only evidence of the existence of God is the absence of the torturer. In their cages, I would have little difficulty concluding that my jailer was living proof that God is deaf, blind, indifferent or dead. Standing in front of a torture chamber I realised the beast was outside the bars and I was two yards away from becoming an atheist."

Korean Animal Protection Society KAPS is dedicated to promoting animal welfare and protection in Korea through education, stricter animal cruelty laws and the continued development of the KAPS shelter. The KAPS shelter, located in Taegu, South Korea, is the only shelter in the country that cares for companion animals. Currently, KAPS provides shelter to more than 85 dogs and 260 cats as well as a few orphaned or injured wildlife. In spite of a 1991 law which prohibits the human consumption of dogs and cats, a flourishing industry exists within the markets in Korea. Illegal and unsanitary dog farms are hidden away in the countryside where breeders raise their stock for the butchers. Because we are a grassroots organization, we need your help to campaign against these violations which most Koreans ignore and the government will not enforce. Most urgently, we need your help to keep our shelter operating.

The Zeke Fund Animal Rescue is a Texas (Spring/Brookshire) unwanted animals organization formed as a result of a sad incident involving the poor canine whose name the organization later took. In August 2004 a local stray was hit by a car. The dog was picked up by animal control and put in an uncovered, stretch metal cage in 100 degree heat for four days. On the fifth day an animal advocate who heard of the animals plight took possession of him and took him to the vet. The dog, now named Zeke, had injuries which included a broken back, pelvis, and two legs. There was no choice but to humanely euthanize Zeke. On that day the Zeke Fund came into being with the promise  - "Never Again!"
