ANIMALS AND POLITICS | DIRECTED BY MIKE MARKARIAN

This is a new blog devoted to discussion and information on lobbying efforts by the HSUS, whose experience in this area is well recognized. Says Markarian, "When I ask local groups [if they] are involved in lobbying efforts to protect animals, I often hear the same response: 'But we’re a nonprofit charity and we’re not allowed to lobby!'" It’s a common misperception, but it’s not true. Charitable groups can and should advocate for public policy changes. Gary D. Bass, executive director of OMB Watch, says that there is a long tradition of charitable advocacy and civic participation in this country: “Nonprofit lobbyists have been involved in nearly every major public policy accomplishment in this country—from civil rights to environmental protection to health care,” he told the Washington Post. It is an area that more activists organizations should muster.

Founded in 1968, API's mission is to advocate for the protection of animals from cruelty and exploitation.

Every year, billions of animals suffer in fur farms and circus cages, in slaughterhouses and product testing labs. In our campaigns against such cruelties, API uses powerful tools including legislation, public education, litigation, and grassroots networking. We also work actively with media to spread the word about challenges facing animals.

API's primary campaign areas currently include animals used in entertainment, captive exotic animals, companion animals, compassionate consumerism, farmed animals, and wildlife protection.

ANIMAL RIGHTS OUTREACH Animal Rights Outreach (ARO) is an organization that is working to end the exploitation of nonhuman animals. The ARO website now has a NEW DISCUSSION FORUM for discussing animal rights issues, organizing local meetups and finding out about worldwide events. ARO concentrates a lot of effort on encouraging people to stop eating animal products (including eggs and milk products) since there are billions of animals that are killed every year in the food industry and a lot of this could be stopped simply by encouraging some people to eat different foods.

ANIMALES S.O.S. (Bolivia) e-mail: bolivia@animalessos.org Animales S.O.S. is the only animal protection organization in Bolivia affiliated with Humane Society International and the WSPA. Since 1995, Animales S.O.S. has helped over a thousand animals a year while operating on a minimal budget. The organization's main focus has been to humanely reduce the stray dog population, estimated at over 80,000 in La Paz alone. Animales S.O.S. is currently in the process of building a "true" shelter, since the animals have always been kept in the founder's house, so progress is being made, ever so slowly.Animales S.O.S. also is the only organization which enforces the laws protecting the wild animals of Bolivia. These animals are often found being sold illegally in markets, where they are neglected and abused by their owners (or neglected and abused by the people that buy them). Compassionate Traveler learned about Animales S.O.S. from one of our volunteers, Valerie Belt. While teaching at an American school in Bolivia, Valerie volunteered for Animales S.O.S. over a two-year period. In addition to donating her own time to the organization, such as walking rescued dogs cared for by Animales S.O.S., she encouraged children at the American school to help. She sponsored a middle school club which raised funds for Animales S.O.S. through bake sales. The students also provided items such as stuffed animals, dog collars, leashes, and ID tags in exchange for donations. Valerie's second year of volunteering also included working with high school students in a Roots & Shoots club (a program of the Jane Goodall Institute - see http://www.rootsandshoots.org/). The high school club's activities to support Animals S.O.S. included raising money, holding a dog food drive, building new cages for the wild birds rescued by Animales S.O.S., and doing dog care education at a local orphanage in La Paz.For more information, please visit the Animales S.O.S. multilingual Web site at:http://www.animalessos.org/

THE ANN COTTRELL FREE WEBSITE Ann Cottrell Free was a pioneering woman journalist, author and poet whose life's work was inspired by three giants of her time: Eleanor Roosevelt, Rachel Carson and Albert Schweitzer. She often found that she was ahead of her time and broke new ground as the "first" to do many things.

AUSTIN PETS ALIVE Austin Pets Alive! is a non-profit volunteer organization started in November, 1997, to make Austin a "No-Kill" city. APA! introduced the No-Kill Millennium Resolution, which was adopted by the Austin City Council and Travis County Commissioners' Court. In a unique partnership with the Town Lake Animal Center (TLAC), APA! is helping to stop the killing of adoptable dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens whose only crime is that they are homeless. Why are they killed? Because there are not enough homes to adopt them all. The Austin Pet overpopulation is everyone's problem, from apartment complexes overrun with feral cats, to the many litters of unwanted puppies and kittens that end up at TLAC, to the adolescent dog with behavior issues.

The BUSHMEAT PROJECT Great apes -- gorillas, chimpanzees, and bonobos -- are being hunted to extinction for commercial bushmeat in the equatorial forests of west and central Africa. A ragged farflung army of 2,000 bushmeat hunters supported by the timber industry infrastructure will illegally shoot and butcher over 3,000 gorillas and 4,000 chimpanzees this year. That's five times the number of gorillas on Rwanda's Mt. Visoke and 20 times more chimpanzees than live near Tanzania's Gombe Stream. People pay a premium to eat more great apes each year than are now kept in all the zoos and laboratories of the world.

CERTIFIED HUMANE The industrialization and consolidation of animal agriculture in the United States and around the world has created enormous “factory farms.” The resulting intensive confinement and overcrowding of livestock in modern agriculture can create stress that impairs an animal’s growth or production. All too often, growth hormones and other chemical food additives are used to compensate -- additives you probably would prefer not to consume. While these conditions may be common, the good news is they are not universal. Many producers (individuals and businesses that raise food-producing animals) provide their farm animals with treatment that safeguards an animal’s well-being and respects its natural behaviors. But how do you know which producers are which? The Certified Humane Raised & Handled label says it all. Producers’ claims that they give their farm animals a more natural, healthful environment are a good start, but the Certified Humane Raised & Handled labeling process goes further. Food items that carry the label are certified to have come from facilities that meet precise, objective standards for farm animal treatment.

Doctors Against Labs Historically medical schools in the United States have used dog labs to teach basic physiology and pharmacology. Today the trend in medical education is away from using dog labs for demonstration purposes. Most of the nation's leading medical schools have developed alternative methods for teaching these disciplines. In dog labs, students or instructors typically anesthetize a dog, cut open the dog's chest and use its beating heart to demonstrate principles of Ýphysiology and pharmacology. At the end of the demonstration, they kill the dog. In some of the alternatives that medical schools have developed, students go to hospitals and observe surgery on humans. They interact with surgeons and anesthesiologists during surgery. In other instances, instructors and students use interactive software. The software graphically simulates human physiology and the effects of pharmacological agents on heart disease, heart rate and blood pressure.

Dogs Deserve Better We are a voice for these who have none, whose sadness speaks only through their eyes. As the days become years, these dogs sit, stay, defecate, and, if among the fortunate, eat within a 10-foot radius. Chained by the neck, they have nothing in the way of respect, love, exercise, social interaction with people and other dogs, and sometimes even basic nourishment. They live as prisoners, yet long to be pets.

DonoteatPigs.orgs Our Mission: To educate the North American public about pigs and their systematically cruel treatment in pig factories, hopefully leading to a substantial reduction in the consumption of pig flesh. Single-Issue Focus: We believe that it is immoral for North Americans to eat any pig flesh, but especially pig flesh produced in the standard American confinement pig factory. This is the only issue we'll address.

FARM Most farmed animals are raised on factory "farms," where they spend their entire lives in cages or crates so small that they can not even turn around. Farmed animals are not protected from cruelty under the law. In fact, the majority of state anti-cruelty laws specifically exempt farm animals from basic humane protection — so abandoning a sick animal on a pile of dead animals is considered “normal animal agricultural” practice. Hilda on a "deadpile"  Farm animals are living, feeling animals, not agribusiness “commodities.” Farm Sanctuary is working to change the way society views and treats animals used for food production. With the active support of over 100,000 members, we are.

FEDERATION DE LIAISONS ANTI CORRIDA (FLAC) French site organized to fight bullfights in Spain and elsewhere. In French, German, English and Italian.

Friends of Iran's Centerfor Animal Lovers

The Friends of Iran's Center for Animal Lovers is a not-for-profit organization that is committed to collecting funds for Iran's first, and only, shelter for cats and dogs.

Funding for programs like this are non existent within Iran, as a result, the center is funded solely by the generous donations from individuals like yourself. The funds collected are used to purchase goods ( such as food, leashes, blankets and tick/flea repellants ) for the scared and tired animals at the shelter. Pursuant to a general license from the US government, no funds are directly sent to Iran, rather the goods are purchased in the US and then sent to the shelter.

The Nature of the Problem

Fundraising is a difficult task in many situations and trying to raise funds for a cause not valued by the members of a society seems like a near impossibility. In many low income countries, people are concerned with providing themselves with food and shelter and do not have the resources to contribute to a “secondary” cause. In most of these nations, the population at large is not well educated about issues related to animal rights and welfare. This makes fundraising one of the most challenging aspects of running a shelter for animals in Iran.

GODDARD COLLEGE (VT) ENVIRONMENTAL & ANIMAL TOPICS PAGE Welcome to "George," Goddard College’s environmental and sustainability studies resources page. Named for George Perkins Marsh, the Vermonter whose book Man and Nature (1864) was the first study of human impacts on a global scale, "George" provides both a basic bibliography and a portal to World Wide Web sources. This page is a research tool and an introduction to the many faces of environmental and sustainability studies.

Resources were chosen based upon their usefulness as: 1) introductions to their fields of study; 2) sources of significant information; or 3) portals to additional sources. We have also tried to offer diverse perspectives on controversial issues to promote a deeper understanding of them.

You can help us to continue building this site. We welcome your comments and recommendations of additional sources that meet these criteria. Please spread the word about this site by linking it to yours. If you find broken links, please tell us about them. Send your comments and suggests to the page editor, LuttsR@Goddard.edu.

Gorilla World A site dedicated to information on this great species and its precarious hold on survival throughout Africa.

The Green Web The Green Web is a small independent research group and network with a left biocentric perspective. (This is a socially-conscious tendency within the deep ecology movement.) The Green Web aims to serve the needs of activists in the environmental and green movements. We do not solicit or accept government or corporate funding. The nucleus of the Green Web is based in Nova Scotia, Canada. Our network of information distribution and exchange exists on a local, provincial, national, and international level. We believe the world-wide industrial capitalist system is destroying the Earth. This system, with its human-centered view of nature as a "resource" and its roots in endless economic growth and consumerism, has us all on a death path. Needed are new ecological, social, political, spiritual and cultural visions, and a reduction in human population. A new environmental ethic and associated environmental economics are required. societies have to be ecologically sustainable for the survival of all species on Earth.

Humane Farming Association (HFA) HFA continues to prove that with the right strategy, knowledge, and long-term commitment - major changes will result. HFA's National Veal Boycott continues to be the single most successful campaign ever conducted against factory farming. Already, HFA has achieved an unprecedented drop in the sale of drugged, anemic, and tormented baby calves. HFA's campaign against Bovine Growth Hormones (BGH) has been pivotal in mobilizing the public against this cruel and dangerous dairy hormone. And HFA has expanded its campaign against factory farming -- to stop the abuse of millions of pigs, laying hens, and other animals victimized by factory farming.

IN DEFENSE OF ANIMALS—AFRICA- In Defense of Animals-Africa’s mission is to save Cameroon's chimpanzees and gorillas from extinction. The illegal bushmeat trade and habitat loss are the primary threats to ape populations. IDA-Africa wages a Public Education and Sensitization Campaign, producing and distributing posters and brochures, giving presentations in schools and communities, and broadcasting radio ads to raise awareness of laws against holding or killing chimpanzees and gorillas and make it socially unacceptable to eat them. IDA-Africa’s Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Center (SYCRC) provides sanctuary to 55 chimpanzees ~ all of whom are orphans of the illegal bushmeat trade. Hunters captured them as young babies, often still clinging to their mothers’ bodies, to sell as "pets" or hotel “mascots”. Some orphans at SYCRC were rescued as infants, others languished in strict, debilitating confinement for decades before their second chance for a life of joy and dignity at SYCRC. IDA-Africa offers volunteer opportunities in Cameroon and an Adopt-A-Chimpanzee program.

Indonesian Vegan Society The Indonesian Vegan Society exists to promote a lifestyle that is free from animal products. The reasons for adopting veganism are many and include health, compassion, preserving natural resources, and making better use of water and farm lands.

k9carts.com The K-9 Cart Company was founded in the early 1960's by Dr. Lincoln J. Parkes, a Veterinary Orthopedic Specialist to develop a device that would allow mobility-impaired pets to walk and lead an active life. Dr. Parkes realized that there were many pets for whom surgery was not an option, either for medical or financial reasons. Owners of such pets were unwilling to give up and needed a means to provide improved quality of life for their pets, thus was born the idea of the "K9-Cart"--a wheelchair for pets. In addition to providing positive mobility for the permanently impaired pet, the K9-Cart is indicated as a post-surgical or post-injury rehabilitative aid and has helped return many pets to full mobility.

The Kindness Trust Our mission is: “To promote kindness towards all other living beings and enshrine it as a recognisable trait in the Australian character and culture ” From their stateted beliefs: "I can understand why some theologians believe animals have no souls. To the tortured animal, the only evidence of the existence of God is the absence of the torturer. In their cages, I would have little difficulty concluding that my jailer was living proof that God is deaf, blind, indifferent or dead. Standing in front of a torture chamber I realised the beast was outside the bars and I was two yards away from becoming an atheist."

Korean Animal Protection Society KAPS is dedicated to promoting animal welfare and protection in Korea through education, stricter animal cruelty laws and the continued development of the KAPS shelter. The KAPS shelter, located in Taegu, South Korea, is the only shelter in the country that cares for companion animals. Currently, KAPS provides shelter to more than 85 dogs and 260 cats as well as a few orphaned or injured wildlife. In spite of a 1991 law which prohibits the human consumption of dogs and cats, a flourishing industry exists within the markets in Korea. Illegal and unsanitary dog farms are hidden away in the countryside where breeders raise their stock for the butchers. Because we are a grassroots organization, we need your help to campaign against these violations which most Koreans ignore and the government will not enforce. Most urgently, we need your help to keep our shelter operating.

The Marchig Animal Welfare Trust was established in 1989 by Madame Jeanne Marchig of Geneva because of her deep concern for nature and animals and in memory of her late husband, the Italian painter Giannino Marchig. The objects of the Trust are to protect animals and to promote and encourage practical work in preventing animal cruelty and the relief of animal suffering. These objects are pursued by the Trust in two ways:

MARCHIG ANIMAL WELFARE GRANTS>>These are made to organisations and individuals for positive contributions which meet the objectives of the Trust. Since the Trust was founded it has supported a wide variety of projects including mobile spay/neuter clinics, the search for alternatives to the use of animals in research, poster campaigns, anti-poaching programmes, establishing a network of animal sanctuaries as well as assisting smaller groups committed to the cause of animal welfare. Special projects at a variety of sanctuaries and refuges have also been funded. All submissions must be animal welfare oriented and be of direct benefit to animals.

MARCHIG ANIMAL WELFARE AWARDS>> These are awarded for outstanding work by an organisation or individual in either of the following two categories: 1. The development of an alternative method to the use of animals in experimental procedures and the practical implementation of such an alternative resulting in a significant reduction in the numbers of animals used in experiments; or 2. Practical work in the field of animal welfare resulting in significant improvements for animals either nationally or internationally. The Marchig Animal Welfare Trust is a UK registered charity, registration number 802133.
