Presenting Animal People

Animal People, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charity (Federal Tax Identification number 14-1752216), incorporated in 1992 with the stated charitable purpose "of exposing the existence of cruelty to animals and educating the public of the need to prevent and eliminate such cruelty; conducting or sponsoring animal care projects, both to directly alleviate animal suffering and to demonstrate humane methods of handling and responding to animal-related dilemmas; and studying animal-related issues via research, surveys, and investigative reports."

Animal People, Inc. moved from New York to Washington state in 1996.

Animal People, Inc. has six major program areas:

1) Publication of ANIMAL PEOPLE newspaper, covering animal protection worldwide. In addition to providing news reportage, we offer a lively forum for discussion and debate about ideas and tactics, via letters and guest columns. Major ongoing themes of coverage include innovative approaches to animal care, domestic and wild animal population control, and humane education. Early-age neutering, neuter/return feral cat control, high-volume adoption, care-for-life of exotic and dangerous animals, and conversion of shelters to no-kill policies all began on a limited local scale here and there before ANIMAL PEOPLE debuted in 1992, but each exploded in popularity and prominence soon after we devoted significant page space to discussion of successful projects and debate over their pros and cons. From the beginning, Animal People has given prominence to extending lifesaving humane services to rural areas of the United States and in developing countries where animal care has been substandard or nonexistent. We are now seeing a surge of interest in outreach to poor, rural, and foreign animal protection projects, also following considerable attention to such outreach from Animal People.

Subscriptions to ANIMAL PEOPLE newspaper are $24.00 for one year, which includes nine editions.

2) Distribution of complimentary subscriptions to ANIMAL PEOPLE newspaper to animal agencies and charities throughout the world.

This is by far the most costly part of our program, but it is also fundamental to accomplishing the rest of our objectives.
At inception, Animal People determined that if we were going to make a real difference in how effectively the humane community responds to problems, we would have to reach the entire humane community with every edition -- and we knew that the people and organizations most in need of our informational support tend to have the least resources with which to buy a subscription. Many organizations abroad -- especially in the underdeveloped nations of Africa, Asia, and Latin America -- simply could not buy a subscription, no matter what. Accordingly, sending free subscriptions to animal charities and agencies worldwide has always been a priority.

3) Maintenance of the largest on-line news-and-information archive for animal welfare. The contents of ANIMAL PEOPLE back editions are freely accessible and user-searchable at: <www.animalpeoplenews.org>
The site contains thousands of pages, including some articles translated into Spanish and French.

4) Accountability monitoring, to assure donors that animal protection organizations are delivering the services they promise to provide when they solicit funds. This is accomplished via "The Watchdog," a regular investigative feature of ANIMAL PEOPLE, supplemented by The Watchdog Report on Animal Protection Charities, a supplemental publication which provides further information pertaining to the hundred-plus organizations we are most often asked about. It summarizes their major programs along with any program-related controversies, administrative issues, and/or policy-related issues involving them. The Watchdog Report on Animal Protection Charities is sold for $25.00.

5) Education and training for animal workers in developing countries, usually in connection with co-sponsored conferences in Asia and Africa. We believe that nurturing and teaching animal rescuers in disadvantaged areas has the potential of revolutionizing the standard of animal care in their countries, and is an investment in a better future for animals.

6) Direct financial aid to trustworthy animal projects in many parts of the world. Overseas contributions exceeded a quarter-million dollars in the past year.
