From ANIMAL PEOPLE, November 2000--
EVANSVILLE, Indiana-- Ron Young, fired in April after 13 years as
director of the Mesker Park Zoo for losing American Zoo Association
accreditation in 1998 and failing to regain it, due to dubious
animal-trading, has been elected president of the United Zoo Association,
formed to represent zoos which do not meet the AZA standards. Also
reportedly among the founders is the Little Rock Zoo, likewise recently
stripped of AZA accreditation.
