San Jose Cat Program Update

SAN JOSE, Calif.--A city-subsidized cat neutering program begun
in October 1994 has cut animal control cat pickups by 10% and owner
surrenders of cats at the Humane Society of Santa Clara Valley by 32%,
reports National Pet Alliance founder Karen Johnson. Cumulative costs for
the first five years of the program were "just over $400,000," according
to Johnson, and are now $65,000/year--enough, she believes, to alter
about 3% of the unaltered cats in San Jose each year. Johnson estimates
that the program saves the city $350,000 a year in animal control expense.
