From ANIMAL PEOPLE, December 2000:

Hunters lose another round in Britain

MANCHESTER, U.K.--Both pro-hunting Countryside Alliance candidate
Nicholas Soames and anti-hunting Royal SPCA candidate Richard Ryder were
defeated, by margins of 15,000 and 12,000 votes, respectively, in
November bids for election to the ruling council of the National Trust of
Britain. The 2.7-million-member land trust banned stag hunting from its
holdings in 1997. Soames sought to reverse the ban.
